A relative newcomer to the Okanagan, Sam McNally is passionate about making and teaching music. Having picked up the horn in middle school in Calgary, AB, Sam quickly fell in love with the instrument. While in Calgary he studied with Laurie Matiation before setting off for the University of Victoria to pursue a bachelor’s degree in performance. In Victoria, Sam studied with Kurt Kellan and could regularly be found playing around town in various groups such as the Victoria Symphony and Palm Court Light Orchestra. In 2015, Sam became principal horn of the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra where he performed, while commuting from Victoria, until he finished his studies two seasons later. After graduating from UVic the pervious spring, in the fall of 2017 Sam made his way to London, UK to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the Orchestral Artistry course. Guildhall offered many opportunities such as working with the LSO in both performance and education departments, collaboration across disciplines throughout the school, and world-class instruction though guest conductors, masterclasses, and lectures. In London, Sam studied with David Pyatt, Alec Frank-Gemmill, Sue Dent, and Nico Fleury and along with their help, in November 2018 graduated with a Master’s of Music. Currently, Sam can be found performing with the Okanagan and Kamloops Symphonies and in various groups across the valley.
