Tanya Westby

Strings Instructor
PAMDA-Faculty-1-of-1-3.jpg

Music has been a part of Tanya’s life since she was a young child.  Her parents exposed her to all sorts of musical experiences from live symphonies to pop concerts and she began playing music herself from the age of 6.  Throughout Tanya’s life she has played many instruments before finally choosing the violin as her main music focus.

At 6, Tanya started playing the piano and completed Level 8 of the Royal Conservatory of Music by 14 when she decided to switch instruments.  Following piano she played classical guitar for about 6 years, played in a hand bell choir and during her junior and senior high school years picked up trombone.  During those years she performed with stage bands, 12 piece jazz bands, in music festivals and with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra.

As an adult Tanya became immersed in music in different ways.  Tanya is a teacher by trade and loves working with kids and teens of all ages.  She spent several years working for the Vancouver School Board where she used her skills on the piano and guitar to help get kids involved in music.

Tanya homeschooled her children who completed the Music For Young Children Program, played the piano (to Grade 10 RCM), classical voice (to grade 9 RCM), violin (to grade 8) and music theory.  With her family, Tanya attended many music camps including Jam Camp and a Celtic Music School in Sechelt.  She has lots of experience teaching different kinds of learners.  Tanya has been playing and performing with the Penticton Academy String Orchestra for over 10 years.

Tanya believes in a holistic approach to learning music.  As a teacher her main goals are to foster the love of music while helping the students meet their individual learning goals.  While music is a big part of Tanya’s life she also enjoys gardening, cooking, baking, canning, cycling, hiking, travelling and spending time with friends and family.
