Jeff Andrew is a guitarist, fiddler and singer-songwriter with 3 albums to date, hundreds of shows performed across Canada, and dozens of festival appearances. He began playing guitar at age 13 and spent his high school years playing classic rock, punk, and metal in a series of bands before discovering folk music in his early 20s.

This led him to pick up the fiddle, which soon became an obsession. He began playing at weekly Celtic sessions in Victoria, led by renowned fiddler Daniel Lapp, and learnt a repertoire of Irish tunes there and from other players in the thriving West Coast trad scene. Daily busking sessions, week-long immersions at fiddle camps, and a winter spent in Nova Scotia learning Maritime fiddle styles and playing 2nd violin with the Halifax Music Co-op (a community orchestra) further sharpened his chops.

In 2017, Jeff completed a Diploma of Music at Vancouver Community College, specializing in composition for strings and choir. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Victoria in creative writing and journalism.

Jeff’s guitar style covers a range of techniques, from country & blues-based fingerpicking and percussive acoustic strumming to loud, effects-driven electric guitar riffs and leads - whatever suits the song. On fiddle, he performs and teaches a mix of Celtic, Old-Time and free-form improvisation, taking classical technique as a foundation that can be adapted to suit a full range of styles. Ornamentation, bowing, and phrasing, along with the history of different fiddle traditions, are seen as essential to the pursuit of an authentic sound.

Jeff  teaches both from sheet music and by ear, with an emphasis on the rhythmic and harmonic structures of songs and tunes. Whether your goal is to play around a campfire, learn how to jam on music you’ve never heard before, or turn your original fragments into complete songs with full-band arrangements, Jeff can give you the string skills and theoretical background to bring the music in your imagination to life.

Jeff believes in making music accessible to everyone, and his goal is to teach students how to be their own teachers. He is excited to teach beginner to advanced students of all ages.
