Get Ready for the Big Band Extravaganza – June 14 in Summerland!

Updated: Jun 12

Summerland and surrounding communities, mark your calendars—because something swingin’ this way comes!

The BIG BAND EXTRAVAGANZA is back by popular demand and set to light up the Memorial Park band shell on Saturday, June 14.

Last year’s event drew hundreds of enthusiastic music lovers who raved about the experience—and this year promises to be even better. With four powerhouse big bands, an iconic outdoor setting, and the joy of live music ringing through the park, it’s an afternoon you won’t want to miss.

🎷 The Line-up Each group brings the classic big band sound, with five saxophones, four trombones, four trumpets, a full rhythm section—and of course, talented vocalists to round out the vibe.

Here’s the performance schedule:

  • 12:00 PM – South Okanagan Big Band (Summerland)

  • 1:15 PM – Okanagan Valley Big Band (Vernon)

  • 2:30 PM – Lake Country Big Band (Lake Country)

  • 3:45 PM – Thursday Night Jazz Band (Penticton)

Expect everything from swinging standards to soulful ballads, all delivered with toe-tapping energy and incredible musicianship.

💃 Dancers Welcome! Big Band music is enjoying a well-deserved comeback, and swing dancers have taken notice. These lively groups—often made up of young and middle-aged adults—bring great energy to every event. So if the mood strikes, don't be shy about dancing on the grass!

🎺 Music with a Mission Did you know it would cost over $7,000 to pay four full big bands at union rates for this kind of event? These generous musicians are performing entirely for the love of it, and they’re also donating their time to help raise funds for the Summerland Community Centre. That’s community spirit in action! A donation "hat" will be passed around—so please give what you can to support both the Centre and the musicians.

🪑 What to Bring Bring your lawn chairs, refreshments, and a love for live music. Settle in, soak up the sunshine, and let the sounds of saxes, trumpets, and trombones transport you.

Rain or Shine In the event of inclement weather, the Extravaganza will move indoors to the Summerland Community Centre, with seating for approximately 100 people and admission by donation. Please note that the kitchen and bar will not be open during the indoor event.

Let’s celebrate summer with the timeless sound of Big Band jazz, community connection, and musical joy. See you at the band shell!
