Jon Johnson
Guitar, Theory, Songwriting
Jon Johnson is a guitarist and educator originally from Penticton, BC. His own musical path began at PAMDA at the Leir House, where he first studied as a student—an experience that sparked his passion for lifelong learning and the power of personal instruction.
He has performed in indie bands and jazz combos, contributed to collaborative studio projects, and continues to explore new ideas through ongoing study. After spending a semester in the jazz program at Capilano University, he shifted toward more independent and exploratory musical development. His current areas of interest include the harmonic frameworks of bebop pianist Barry Harris and the conceptual approaches of guitarist Mick Goodrick.
As a teacher, Jon offers lessons in guitar, theory, and songwriting to students of all ages. He integrates traditional technique with creative exploration, helping students gain fluency in reading sheet music, using tablature, and developing their ear. His lessons often focus on the personal music tastes of his students—breaking down how songs are written, why certain choices work, and how to apply those insights in their own playing and writing.
In addition to his musical work, Jon began his teaching career in North Vancouver and now works in School District 67. His experience in public education shapes a thoughtful, student-centered approach to music lessons—especially when working with aspiring songwriters developing both their musical and lyrical voices.
Jon is available to teach at Leir House on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
